Lighting Designers

High-quality lighting design enhances the architectural experience. You don’t want to just settle for a fixture in the middle of each room’s ceiling. Don’t just let your remodeler design your lighting, and don’t do it yourself.

Then who do you use? If you don’t hire an architect, seek out a high-quality lighting designer with lots of experience in residential lighting at the best lighting shops. These people are not licensed, registered, or certified, so it’s a crap shoot what their education, training, and experience are. But walk into a shop and ask to see their top residential lighting designer—and that should do the trick. By doing this, at least you won’t get a salesperson; you’ll get a talented designer who can take the plans that others have drawn for you, and enhance them.

Undoubtedly, you won’t need or even like all the types of high-tech lighting that are available today. But the improved methods for lighting kitchens these days compared to just fifteen or twenty years ago are amazing. Dimmable LEDs in the 2700–3000K range are everywhere and can be used as task lighting from the ceiling, from under the cabinets, or from fixtures. The bulbs (lamps) last much longer, are cool to operate (little heat produced), and cost pennies to run even when lit all day long.

So explore the world of options open to you in a lighting showroom or design studio, and have fun!
